About Us
The Beginning
HaSt wasn't born from a business plan. It was born from a feeling that refused to fade.
It traces back to a vivid blue Sambalpuri frock I wore as a child, oversized, breathable, and woven with a softness that let me run wild without a care in the world.
That sense of ease became my constant. Fast forward to my days at IIM-A, and while the setting had shifted from playgrounds to lecture halls, Sambalpuri weaves remained my anchor. But amidst the rigor of life & business school, I spotted a disconnect. While I found everyday comfort in these weaves, the world viewed them as rigid "traditional wear" or closet treasures
I realized that the fabric I loved didn't need to change, the perspective did.
The Journey Back
Driven by this conviction, I traded the corporate trajectory for the winding roads of rural Odisha.
I wasn't looking for vendors; I wanted the heartbeat of the craft. Bypassing the noise of powerlooms and trading houses, I went straight to the villages, right into the homes of the weavers. The journey wasn't seamless. To many, I was an outsider with a disruptive vision. There was skepticism. There was hesitation. But I kept showing up. My promise was simple: to work with artisans one craft and one step at a time. Slowly, skepticism turned into conversation, and conversation into trust.
HaSt was born in those moments, not on a contract, but on a shared leap of faith with the weavers families
Honouring the craft, Playing with form
Together, to bring this vision to life, we started with Bandha Kala: Odisha’s GI tagged tie-and-dye craft.
This isn't just a fabric, it is engineering and art combined. Every thread is patiently tied and dyed before it even touches the loom. We honor this intricate process while boldly playing with form, creating contemporary silhouettes that fit the pace of your modern life. We believe that true sustainability isn't a new trend; it is an ancient Indian way of life. We don't need to reinvent fabrics, our handlooms have been sustainable for centuries. We just need to support the practices and create the awareness they deserve.
The Untold Story
We took this path because Odisha is a powerhouse of craft waiting to be discovered.
Despite holding the second-highest number of GI tags in India, our textiles remain a secret to the modern wardrobe. For too long, these weaves have been revered as art pieces for the select few, rather than staples for the many. We exist to bridge that gap. We are here to take this heritage beyond just heirloom craft and make it accessible to everyone, proving that this art is meant to be worn, not just admired.
When you choose HaSt, you aren't just wearing a piece of art; you are supporting the hands that keep it alive, turning conscious fashion into your everyday reality.
